Exciting opportunity to see the Dead Sea Scrolls in Boston

Portions of the Dead Sea Scrolls, one of the most stunning archaeological finds of the last century, are on display at the Boston Museum of Science now through Oct. 14, 2013.

The exhibit presents 20 rare fragments from the scrolls, including the earliest known Biblical writings ever found, along with their English translations and explanations of each scroll’s significance. Some of these documents have never before been exhibited in North America.

The story of the scrolls’ discovery is amazing unto itself: they were found in 1947 by a Bedouin goat herder, who stumbled into a hidden cave along the shore of the Dead Sea. Inside the cave were priceless texts that had not seen the light of day for 2,000 years.

The Boston Museum of Science exhibit also showcases an extensive collection of antiquities from Israel, including a three-ton stone from the Western Wall in Jerusalem, textiles, coins, carvings, weapons, ceramics, jewelry, and more. A replica of a four-room house provides a glimpse of life in ancient times, from religious rituals to meal preparation. The museum is offering hands-on activities and other special programs to complement the Dead Sea Scroll exhibit. Click here for a full schedule.

Admission to this special event is by timed ticket only, and advance reservations are recommended. Visit the museum website for more information.
