Fans of musical theater have something to cheer about this October. The Tony Award-winning musical Million Dollar Quartet will be playing at the Citi Emerson Colonial Theatre on Boylston Street in Boston from Oct. 8 through Oct. 20.
The show is based on an incredible true story: in December of 1956, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins gathered at Sun Records studio in Memphis for what was surely one of the greatest impromptu recording sessions in rock ‘n’ roll history. These four rock n’ roll icons, in various stages of their careers, acted as backup musicians for each other while just below the surface, everyone was struggling for professional survival. Million Dollar Quartet weaves riveting performances of hits like “Who Do You Love?” “Hound Dog,” Blue Suede Shoes,” “I Walk the Line,” and “Great Balls of Fire” with a story of simmering resentments, betrayal, and triumph.
Reviews of Million Dollar Quartet have been ecstatic, comparing the show with feel-good jukebox musicals like “Jersey Boys” and “Mamma Mia.” The performance is suitable for all ages, but it holds special appeal for aficionados of classic rock ‘n’ roll (you know who you are)!
