School’s Out For Winter; The Blue Men take on the Snowmen

February 11, 2015

Record snowfall in the Boston area leaves many residents yearning for the far off lands of 85F and sunny, or at the very least a clear path to their car. For those staying home during the upcoming winter break for students, the area offers a multitude of outdoor and indoor activities.

Faneuil Hall Marketplace is the center of action, offering a week of free activities for kids and families. With the schedule changing each day, kids of any age can be engaged by crafts, music and entertainment. Paint a Yo-Yo and learn tricks from John Higby, the Yo-Yo champion of the world, get juggling lessons with Paris “The Hip-Hop Juggler” or watch Wacky Chad’s stunt comedy show.

The Blue Man Group will be preforming from February 14th – 22nd, bringing vivid colors to Boston [or at least the Charles Playhouse]. Combining music, comedy and technology, they “create a form of entertainment that defies categorization and appeals to people of all ages.” With 24 shows over nine days, something is sure to fit in your schedule.

To embrace the winter, Disney On Ice presents “Frozen” at the Garden – hosted by Mickey and Minnie Mouse. The stars of Frozen will be joined by appearances from other Disney princesses, and favorite characters from Toy Story, Finding Nemo and The Lion King.

Regardless of your plans, The Kendall wishes you and your family a fun-filled winter break, and safe travels — whether it be to a sunny beach or traversing the city.

January 26, 2015

Even with the New Year just over, kids [and adults..] are beginning to plan their mid-winter break. Cambridge and Boston offer a host of activities for all ages, and The Kendall Hotel is located right in the middle of a flurry of activity. Our neighbor Kendall Square offers outdoor ice-skating, skating lessons and rentals seven days a week. For indoor skating, the Steriti Rink in Boston is open daily and has expansive windows that overlook the wharf for an outdoor feel. There are several places in the area to sled or snow-tube with various-sized hills for any age, or venture outside the city to one of the nearby skiing slopes for the day.

For those that prefer to be an observer of strenuous activity, check schedules of the local sports teams : hockey with Harvard, Boston University or the Bruins, or Celtics basketball. For those that prefer to be an observer of arts and culture, there are several large museums and attractions where one can easily spend an afternoon — from the Museum of Fine Arts, to the New England Aquarium, to the Museum of Science.

Thursday, February 19th welcomes the Year of the Sheep and marks the beginning of the Chinese Lunar New Year. The Chinese New Year Parade [set for March 1, this year] is the biggest event in Boston’s Chinatown, and features Lion Dancers, drums and firecrackers.

After a day of exploring and activity, come back to The Kendall and warm yourself by the fire in the front lounge, or get a comforting meal at The Black Sheep Restaurant. Explore the historic building, curated artwork, and venture up to the Rooftop Retread for a skyline view of the city. Be sure to visit our Special Offers page to see if there’s a suitable package for your stay.
